Since then, Eren and his friends decided to get revenge from the titans and their goal was to reclaim the world from the titans. They eventually joined an elite group of soldiers who were trained to fight against the titans.

This series has amaze audiences from all around the world and has a sustainable active fanbase. The second part of the fourth and the final season is scheduled to be released in 2022.

TOKYO GHOUL

Tokyo Ghoul, it is based on Japanese dark fantasy manga series written and illustrated by Sui Ishida. The series has a bit similar plot, in Attack on Titan the titans devour humans for no personal reason but here in Tokyo Ghoul, where ghouls have to devour humans in order to survive.

The series focuses on a protagonist character named “Ken Kaneki” a half ghoul, he was born human but how did he become a ghoul? Curious. A half ghoul is either born naturally as a ghoul from a person’s offspring or artificially created by transplanting ghoul organs to a human body. Well ghouls have extraordinary enhanced powers and regenerative abilities given that; they also are blessed with one special predatory organ called a Kagune. However, a half ghoul gets the upper hand as they’re stronger than a pure ghoul.

When Ken Kaneki was a human, he fell victim to a ghoul and barely survived the deadly encounter with a ghoul named Rize Kamishiro. He survives the accident because some of Rize’s organs were transferred into his body, and now he finds himself in a situation where he has to eat human flesh in order to survive.

Eventually, a coffee shop run by ghouls take him and teach him to deal with his life. And the story begins there… if you want to know what happens next do watch this anime series, you won’t regret it.

GOD EATER

(Genre: Action, Demons, Fantasy, Military, Supernatural)

This epic anime series animated by Ufotable is adapted from a video game named God Eater. Ufotable studio has always created the best anime series like fate zero and fate stay night and God Eater is one of the best dark violence series. This series focuses on a monster known as Aragami, a beast that the main character is determined to destroy.

The story starts in the near future in the year 2071, where an organization known as Fenrir helps humanity protect themselves from the beast. It takes place in a nation called NUA (New Asian Union) which was devastated by the monsters. Why was Aragami so strong? He uses some divine weapons called as God Arcs, intricately created from biological material called Oracle cells.

God arcs are wielded by a group of soldiers known as God eaters.However, Fenrir was the only organization capable of killing the Aragami monster with their weapons. The old type God arcs could only keep a single form but later a new type was discovered which can significantly switch between gun and blade.

PARASYTE

(Genre: Action, Drama, Horror, Psychological, Sci-fi, Seinen)

Parasyte, series is also known as Parasyte-the- maxim-, Parasite, Parasitic beasts and Kiseijuu: Sei no kakuritsu. This series is based on a Japanese science fiction horror manga series both written and illustrated by Hitoshi Iwaaki. This manga series won the Kodansha Manga Award in 1993 and also the best manga in 1996 the Seiun Award. Parasyte has great heart wrenching situations which will take your breath away. This series revolves around a 17-year-old boy, a high school student who lives with his family in Hiroshima.

The story begins when one night tiny-ugly aliens called as parasites land on earth and start taking over the brains of humans by entering through their nose or ears. Unfortunately, the main character named “Shinichi” falls victim to the aliens. However, the alien fails to take over his brain and in desperation attaches to Shinichi’s right arm. Thus, labeling the young man as similar to parasites and a threat to humans.

So, the parasite was named Migi, after the Japanese word for ‘right’. However, gradually their bond gets stronger and in order to survive against the other parasites they start working together.

AKAME GA KILL

(Genre; Action, Adventure, Fantasy)

Akame Ga Kill! also known as Akame ga kiru! This series is based on a Japanese manga sequel written by Takahiro and illustrated by Tetsuya Tashiro. The story focuses on a fighter named Tatsumi. To help his poverty-stricken villagehe decides to go to the capital with his two best friends, to earn money. However, what happens next will break your heart.

Unaware of the cruel corruption going on in the capital they arrived. But then, a tragic accident happens, they get robbed, beaten and his two friends get slaughtered in front of his eyes by the Empire. However, as the story begins with such a horrifying scene, he is saved by an assassin group known as Night Raid.

Later after seeing the world, his friends being killed and a brutal fight for freedom, he joins the assassin group to help them in their war against the corrupt Empire. Let’s see if they can defeat the mysterious and powerful Empire.

CASTLEVANIA

(Genre: Supernatural, Action, Mystery, Vampire)

Castlevania, it is an American anime-influenced adult animated tv series, based on a Japanese video game series of the same name created by Konami. It has four seasons and is one of the best animated series on Netflix. In fact, this story has a lot of dark scenes with bloodthirsty monsters and vampires just like gigantic Titans in Attack on Titan.

The series was actually planned as a film under producer Kevin Kolde but fortunately with great effort it premiered as a series on Netflix on July 7^th 2017.

This series basically revolves around the fight between the last surviving member of Belmont clan, Trevor Belmont and Vlad Dracula Tepes.

Here, Dracula and his vampire battalion are preparing to get rid of the human kind whereas Trevor is trying to save mankind from the grief maddened Dracula. However, Trevor is not alone but will he be able to defeat Dracula and save mankind from extinction? What do you think?

DARWIN’S GAME

(Genre: Action, Mystery, Shounen)

Darwin’s Game is an anime television series based on Japanese manga series written and illustrated by FLIPFLOPs, adapted by Nexus and aired from Jan 3 to March 20,2020. The story revolves around a phone game that grants the players supernatural powers. But the bad side was the game involves a fight between two people in the game but the one who loses dies in the real world too. Unlike Attack on Titan, this series will show you the darker side of human nature where players from all over Japan indulge themselves in the game and slaughter each other.

However, the series follows different protagonist characters but Kaname Sudo, a young 17-year-old high school student who accidently gets into the Darwin’s Game after losing his close friends due to the game. Eventually, he is the only one who decides to put an end to the life-threatening game. Even though he didn’t want to slaughter anyone in the game, do you think he can end the game where killing is the only way to survive?

JUJUTSU KAISEN

(Genre: Action, Demons, Horror, School, Supernatural, Shounen)

Jujutsu Kaisen, this anime series is based on an amazing Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Gege Akutami. It is a sequel to Akutami’s other series ‘Tokyo Metropolitan Curse Technical school’. In Jujutsu Kaisen, all living beings emit an energy called Cursed energy which arises from negative feelings and emotions. However normal people cannot control or possess the flow curse which as a result gives birth to curses.

This series follows Yuji Itadori, a normal high school boy who lived with his old grandfather. But after his grandfather’s death he joins a secret organization called Jujutsu Sorcerers. The work of the organization is to control the flow of cursed energy and refine the energy to use it as an asset, like it can be used in performing cursed techniques or can build a pocket dimension that covers the surrounding area where all the attacks get stronger.

The twist was that our Yuji becomes the host of the most powerful curse named Ryomen Sukuna, but still being possessed Yuji was able to retain control over his body. Well, don’t you want to know how he encountered such a deadly curse? And will he be able to get rid of the curse?

GOBLIN SLAYER

(Genre: Action, Adventure, Fantasy)

Goblin Slayer is Japanese dark fantasy series based on a light novel series which was written by Kumo Kagyu and illustrated by Noboru Kannatsuki. This story is revolving around an adventurer man known as Goblin Slayer and a female protagonist character the in-experienced Priestess. In this fantasy world where adventurers come from different regions of the world to join the adventurer’s guild under the contract to earn wealth and glory.

The priestess was blessed with some magical powers and was capable of performing healing magic, protective spells and miracles of holy light. Eventually, the in-experienced priestess one day joins her first adventurer guild, but unfortunately all the members of the guild wipes out. However, she is saved by our Goblin Slayer.

As well as, let me tell you more about the Goblin Slayer. He is an adventurer uninterested in fame and glory his only purpose in life is ‘complete elimination of Goblins’. He would kill goblins very brutally, showing no mercy to any of them. Well, don’t you wish to know how he grew up into such a brutal homicidal obsessed man? The series follows with more characters with different interesting stories.

CLAYMORE

(Genre: Action, Adventure, Fantasy, Shounen, Supernatural)

Claymore, an anime series based on a Japanese dark fantasy manga series written as well as illustrated by Nori Hiro Yagi. It has all 26 episodes adapted by Madhouse and directed by Hiroyuki Tanaka. The story starts in a fictional medieval island where the human kind is tormented by some humanoid shapeshifters that eat human flesh, known as Yoma. To destroy these creatures a mysterious group of organizations created a human-yoma hybrid to kill Yoma for a fee.

The human-yoma were known as Claymore or Silver-eyed witches due to their claymore swords and silver eyes. As the island world was divided into 47 districts, each district was assigned to one warrior. Interestingly, both Yoma and Claymore shared a similar demonic energy, known as Yoki, a term for power that allows shape shifting and gives extreme strength.

When these claymore warriors use too much Yoki, they transform or awaken, turning into a higher level super-yoma called ‘Awakened being’. Lastly, the first arc revolves around a protagonist no.47 claymore named Clare, who saves a young boy named Raki, from a yoma. Well, these half-human and half-demon women warriors, will they survive in the process of killing the pure demons?

BERSERK

(Genre: Action, Adventure, Demons, Horror, Military, Romance, Seinen, Drama, Fantasy,  Supernatural)

Berserk is predicated on a Japanese dark fantasy manga series written and illustrated by Kentaro Miura. The story is all about dark fantasy, betrayal and horror scenes. This story revolves around a character named Guts, he is a lone warrior who was born from a hanged corpse. He was adopted by a man named Gambino and raised as a mercenary, who later tries to kill Guts. Furthermore, the story follows a mercenary band called the ‘Band of the Hawk’ and the leader named Griffith.

Guts being a great fighter catches the attention of Griffith, later he forces Guts to join his band. However, after several dark scenes, Guts leaves the band and Griffith goes to prison soon. Later hawks are transported to another dimension where Griffith sacrifices his soldier to the God hand’s apostles and this dark story gets darker and darker with more frightening scenes.

I have added this series in the list of anime like attack on titan because it offers the same level of pain and hardship that Eren has faced. However, I recommend you to watch the series yourself, if you’re a dark fantasy anime lover.
