The Colorful Story of Bikal Rai – The Self-Made Engineer

Did you ever think about giving up your passion? Your dreams? No, you don’t want to and we’re sure Bikal Rai won’t either. This story of a young boy who forged his passion into a career is shared so that Gen Z can feel inspired and motivated to do something great big in life and no matter what never give up on your dream and passion.

Bikal Rai is a great example of what one can achieve if they put their mind to something.  A 19-year-old boy from Sikkim, a dropout and most interestingly a self-made engineer.

How? why? And what’s so interesting about this person?

It is an inspirational story about how a young man, who at the age of 15 drop out from school after his father’s death and took up the responsibility of taking care of his family, worked hard and never gave up on his passion and believed in his skill.

Today he is 19, and his name has been published in the book of 5th standards of Sikkim government school to encourage the upcoming generations.

What he did to get to that point? And why he is known as self-made engineer? Here, let me tell you about his life from the very beginning up to this ‘point’. The point when he was recognized as a self-taught engineer.

Bikal Rai – How his journey started

Bikal Rai, he comes from an impoverished family and lives in a small area of East Sikkim, Mangthang at 32 Mile with his mother and a younger brother. Everything was fine until when he turned 15 and lost his father. Rai and his family struggled due to financial crisis and which eventually led Bikal to dropout from school.

During those hard days, his family income was only Rs.2000 per month which they earned by selling milk and they didn’t had their own house. After all the crisis, he stayed strong and took up the responsibility and looked after his family.

To support his financially weak family he started repairing house hold electronic devices of his neighbors in order to earn money, this eventually helped him sharpen his skills and kept him engaged with electronic devices.

And, this talented boy started saving up extra money and started making some cool electronic stuffs, which no one had expected from a very young boy of his age.

The amazing electronic devices that Bikal Rai made

1.Hydro power generator – which generates 2.3 Volt energy. This generator has the capacity to light up three bulbs and charge four mobile phones at the same time.

2.A fan (DC -3 voltage) – it’s similar to the regular fans which is available in the market, but unlike those fans his created fan is way cheaper.

3.2 Excavator models – he created the model using syringe, plastic, tyre and drip pipe which consist of light, power steering and FM radio in it.

4.A vehicle battery charger.

5.Sensor operated car – which reacts to clapping.

According to resources, fortunately in 2013 “Sikkim Messenger” published the story of this young boy, which literally changed his miserable life.

In the story they shared, how Bikal wished to study PCM at home but had no money to buy books either. But he believed that he can save up enough money in future so he can afford books. He was very young and had the never give up spirit.

Despite the hardships he dreamed of developing Electric Car in Sikkim, “I want to make electric cars in Sikkim” says Bikal.

And as the post went viral, he gained lakhs of well-wishers, people from around the world adored him for the devices that he developed.

Afterwards, something really good happened. Shri Pawan Chamling, the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Sikkim, he made an official proclamation that he will aid Bikal with his further studies in whatever way he can.

Later, Bikal later joined ATTC (Advance Technical Training Centre) at Bardang in Sikkim. According to resources, the Hon’ble PRO of HCM – kept his words and paid for his studies.

With the love and support from the fellow people, government and other reputed organization he has come so far.

At the moment, with the help of the present Chief Minister of Sikkim, Shri Prem Singh Tamang, Bikal is now pursuing B Tech at a renowned institute the Manipal Institute of technology, Sikkim which is located in Majhitar.

No matter how bad you might be feeling at any given moment, no matter what challenges might cross your path, never give up on your dreams and passions.
